  Start the year with dental resolutions

  By making a few simple changes,you(and your loved ones)can easily commit to improving your dental health in 2023 and in the years to come.

  Check your inventory

  Invest in an electric toothbrush.Electric toothbrushes achieve space and speed that manual toothbrushes cannot.They are more powerful so use them gently and always make sure the bristles are soft.Ask your dental hygienist which electric toothbrush is right for you.As a hygienist,I consider each patient's oral needs and find the best way to incorporate them into a customized home care plan.It’s best to replace your toothbrush,whether electric or manual,every 2-3 months or when wear is evident.

  Sometimes the type of toothpaste we use can be overshadowed by all of our other dental responsibilities.It might be a good idea to upgrade your toothpaste or even start using a daily mouthwash.There are many toothpastes,mouthwashes,and tools that can help fight cavities,tooth sensitivity,bleeding gums(gingivitis),and bad breath.As your body changes,so does the protective function of saliva.Diet,medications,pregnancy,and stress are some of the factors that affect saliva,and improved home care products can help combat the negative effects of these changes.Be sure to talk to your hygienist for specific recommendations that fit your current needs.

  Brush up on your skills

  You've been brushing your teeth since you can hold a toothbrush by yourself,but are you brushing your teeth correctly?Look at yourself in the mirror.The bristle tips should be at a 45°angle to the gum line,moving back and forth over only 2-3 teeth at a time.Even if you're using a new electric brush,take your time.It takes a full two minutes,twice a day!Finally,don't forget your tongue.Bacteria harboring on your tongue can cause bad breath.Use a tongue scraper or toothbrush in downward motions to remove buildup.

  What you eat changes what you change

  There are many reasons to reduce sugar in your diet,and dental health is no exception.A diet high in sugar and complex carbohydrates can lead to tooth decay and require restorative treatment by a dentist.

  Increasing your water intake has huge health benefits in general and can also help maintain your oral health.Rinsing with water after meals can help remove food particles that might otherwise be brushed off hours later.Note that adding lemon to water makes it acidic and should not be consumed throughout the day.Acid can make tooth enamel more susceptible to decay and even make teeth more sensitive.Always wait 30 minutes before brushing after consuming acidic drinks or foods to avoid stripping away enamel.

  Visit the dentist!

  Be sure to schedule a visit to your dentist every 6 months for a thorough cleaning and exam.Regular dental exams allow your dentist to evaluate symptoms you may be experiencing and look for signs of problems you may not be aware of yet.Early detection of problems always facilitates a positive outcome.
